As one of the largest and most prestigious events of its kind, the Penn Relays returned this April attracting crowds of more than 110,000. The competition was intense and the atmosphere electric throughout the weekend with over 15,000 athletes from high schools, colleges and professional teams across the country and internationally all competing for the top prize.
Taking place at the historic Franklin Field in Philadelphia, it was great to get the opportunity to once again supply our custom structure for the world’s first and longest-running track and field competition.
For this year’s competition, our engineering team had the task of designing a custom structure to serve as the centerpiece for Penn Relay’s Carnival Village. The structure served not only as a storefront where athletes could purchase and customize On Running brand goods, but also as an interactive space for both athletes and fans.
The 57’ x 59’ structure featured a clear vinyl roof covering our scaff towers and a metal mesh exterior that included soft goods and customized letters. Attached directly to the scaff structure, these customized letters combined to create inspirational quotes to provide the athletes with an extra helping of motivation ahead of their competitions. In contrast to the white background of the structure, the letters, in navy blue and red, added a much-needed pop of color.
